John Matuszak is the senior fellow for international strategy at GCSE. He recently retired after 30 years with the federal government. John spent his career promoting the use of science for decision-making with multiple international organizations, governments, and multilateral environmental agreement processes. He was a senior policy advisor and the division chief for sustainable development and multilateral affairs in the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs. John also represented the State Department in the U.S. Group on Earth Observation and co-chaired their international activities working group. From 2001–2013, John led U.S. engagement with UNEP, the UN Economic Commission for Europe-Committee on Environmental Policy, and the Commission on Sustainable Development, including as U.S. focal point for the Rio +20 Conference. He and his team represented the U.S. on delegations to numerous Multilateral Environmental Agreement processes and multilateral institutions.
