About the Global Council for Science and the Environment
The Global Council for Science and the Environment (GCSE) is a nongovernmental organization established in 1990 that advances the use of science to inform environmental decision-making. The work of GCSE spans boundaries between science and decision-making to strengthen the impact of durable solutions to environmental challenges. GCSE engages scientists, educators, decision-makers, business leaders, and officials at all levels of government. Of note, until January 2021, GCSE was formerly named the National Council for Science and the Environment (NCSE). Please read the GCSE Commitment to Equity, Inclusion, Diversity, Justice and Access.
About the project
With support from NASA, Global Council for Science and the Environment (GCSE) is leading the project, “Toward an Infrastructure for Actionable Knowledge: A Proposal to Support NASA Researchers in User Engagement and Applications Development.” This project will advance the specific work of NASA researchers in developing actionable knowledge, and the practice of boundary spanning in service to the environment more broadly. As part of this project, GCSE has designed a replicable framework for supporting researchers in making their research more relevant to stakeholders. GCSE’s work involves coaching and convening a cohort of 11 NASA-funded scientists, working on issue areas such as water, hazards, biodiversity, and air quality, designing workshops, curriculum, and materials to support their progress over the year. It also provides an opportunity at the nexus of scholarship and practice that can help iterate on our current understanding of how to most effectively design and execute (and funders support) science that is poised to maximize applications and use by decision-makers.
