Flare stacks are tools commonly used as a means of combustion and pressure release of associated petroleum gas (APG). This flaring gas method is widely used across the globe and heavily contributes to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, wastes valuable nonrenewable resources, and contributes to climate change. Although steps towards decreasing global emissions have been made, the next steps towards zero emissions from flaring gas will depend on the implementation of standardized policy and regulations. We suggest a policy framework to be adopted internationally, which will be supported by a literature review based on policies that have successfully led to a decrease in GHG emissions. This framework outlines a novel policy-based solution to standardize the measurement and monitoring of emissions, increase flaring efficiency, implement technologies to minimize emissions reaching flaring, and promote safe practices for companies that regularly flare gas. Gas flaring is important for safely regulating pressure buildup; therefore, cannot be eliminated in favor of a more environmentally friendly practice. However, regulations to minimize and repurpose waste can be introduced to optimize the process and work towards the goal of diminishing GHG outputs worldwide.
