Connecting With Colleagues

Return to The Sights and Sounds of the NCSE 2020 Annual Conference

More than 600 participants, spanning science, practice, and decision-making, attended NCSE 2020. Attendees represented 10 countries—from as close as Canada and as far away as Chile, Finland, Qatar, and Kenya—and more than 40 states. The Annual Conference provided opportunities for diverse groups of scholars from the social and natural sciences to interact with each other, as well as with the decision-makers spanning local government to multilateral institutions.

“[I liked the] engaging dialogue, a community full of passionate and considerate individuals at the confluence of science and change in the world.

The Student Experience

A total of 142 students attended NCSE 2020, reflecting an intentional effort to increase generational diversity, and had many opportunities to connect with each other and senior professionals. Students served as volunteers, presented posters, gave flash talks, participated in plenary panels, and presented in concurrent sessions

In addition, students had the opportunity to learn more about career pathways and opportunities at the intersection of science and decision-making.

A student-led podcasting team attended and documented the convenings by creating a podcast series, The Voices of NCSE 2020. Young journalists who were finalists in Planet Forward’s 2019 Storyfest also attended.

I felt as if volunteering gave me an advantage to attend certain concurrent sessions that I normally would not have thought to attend. My volunteer shifts were diverse enough to give me a full scope experience of what NCSE's Annual Conference has to offer.
