About the Global Council for Science and the Environment (GCSE)

The Global Council for Science and the Environment (GCSE) is a non-governmental organization established in 1990 dedicated to advancing environmental and climate justice by mobilizing scientific knowledge into decision-making.

 

Position Overview

GCSE is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Finance Officer to manage the financial and accounting operations of our nonprofit. This position will be responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, preparing financial reports, managing payroll, and ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations. Candidates with HR experience will be preferred, as this role may involve assisting with human resources tasks (i.e. benefits administration).

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain and manage financial records, including bookkeeping, invoicing, and budget tracking.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reports for the Executive Director and Board of Directors.
  • Manage payroll and process payments for staff, contractors, and vendors.
  • Ensure compliance with nonprofit financial regulations, tax filings, and audits.
  • Monitor cash flow and prepare forecasts to inform organizational planning.
  • Support the development of the annual budget in collaboration with the Executive Director.
  • Handle day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable/receivable, general ledger entries, and reconciliations.
  • If applicable, assist with human resources functions such as managing employee benefits, onboarding, and maintaining personnel records.
  • Work with external auditors, tax professionals, and compliance consultants as needed.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA or other relevant certification preferred.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of accounting experience, preferably in a nonprofit organization.
  • Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles
  • Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Xero) and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks in a remote environment.
  • Experience with payroll systems and HR functions (e.g., benefits administration, onboarding) is a plus.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
