Position Description

The Managing Director is a senior executive of the Global Council for Science and the Environment team and is responsible for implementing strategic business practices, leading and overseeing programmatic and research work in direct consultation with team members, and generally maintaining the overall health of the organization. The Managing Director shares responsibility with the Executive Director and all members of the team for raising funds for the organization and ensuring that its work meets the highest standards of excellence, while maintaining a balanced budget. The Managing Director is responsible for the day-to-day functioning of the organization and reports to the Executive Director. 

Primary Responsibilities

  • Work directly with the Executive Director to ensure overall health of the team and all aspects of organization are in good standing
  • Motivate and provide leadership, support and oversight to the GCSE team and directly manage specific positions
  • Build and lead relationships with external experts and agencies through seminars, conferences and professional networking
  • Ensure that the organization maintains and improves its financial position and grows its membership support
  • Promote professional growth and development throughout the organization
  • Develop and execute strategies to achieve short and long-term goals e.g., update strategic plan and individual work plans
  • Oversee operations including membership and fundraising, compliance status, and sharing the responsibility with the Executive Director to ensure strong financial stability and sound fiscal management
  • Lead by example across all parts of the organization, prioritizing our commitment to equity, inclusion, diversity, justice, and access by consistently elevating considerations of EIDJA in programs, convening, research, and engagement
  • Lead our communications efforts over a broad range of styles, ranging from proposals to social media
  • Build and enhance GCSE’s public profile at events, speaking engagements, etc.
  • Lead and contribute to fundraising efforts as part of senior management

Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in business management or related area
  • Master’s degree preferred in business management or related area
  • 5 to 8 years of experience as Managing Director or in another senior executive role
  • Experience in developing and executing business strategies and meeting strategic goals
  • Ability to evaluate risks and opportunities through analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Willingness and ability to take initiative and drive for results
  • Strong strategic partnership building skills
  • Able to prioritize their own work and the work of others and to understand how their work fits into the team and the overall work of the organization
  • Skilled in Google Apps, CRM like Salesforce, and Microsoft Office Suite, with a high level of general computer competency
  • Excellent communication and leadership qualities
  • Strong project management skills 
  • Ability to manage time effectively and to work toward multiple goals simultaneously
  • Ability to work independently, enthusiastically, dynamically, and with flexibility
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship, now or at any time in the future
  • Must be located near or in the Washington D.C. metro area
